New Releases

I have a bunch of recordings of my PhD works that I’m currently releasing, one per month.

But I’m going to make it kind of an experiment, at least to start off with. I will not be putting them on any kind of streaming platform, or on CD. Listeners will need to get in touch with me directly to hear the music, whether it be via file share, air drop in person or even a USB stick they bring next time they see me. They will get the music for free, with a ‘suggested donation’ of a 5-or-more-word response to the music.

I like this as a way of setting up a relationship between myself and the listener. This music is meaningful, and maybe if people listen with a bit more knowledge of its story and context, it’ll be a richer experience than just having an algorithm play it at them. Importantly, my research into Indigenous knowledges and ways shows the importance of relationships and reciprocity, so I’m attempting to build these in to my music sharing.

I’m aware that this may be impractical, and not exactly helpful in getting a large audience for my music. There’s also no $ in it (yet - I’ll release a full collection later). That’s ok - fame and fortune are not what I’m here for. I’m also interested to see how it goes as a way of trying to get around some of the ickiness of streaming and the impersonal nature of much of our music consumption.

If you would like to be on my list of listeners that I send these to, please contact me via my email address, at the bottom of this page.

Feedback for Go Mangrove

”I listened to the music a few times before I read the info page. I loved it, and it really quieted me down. The first half sounded ancient, and somewhat sacred, like a ceremony that honors the earth and nature that has been repeating since the start of human civilization.” - Yuxiao Chen

“Mud, tide in, salt water, floating slowly down a river looking at the mangroves on the shore line, breezy summer afternoon.” - Ian Pieterse

“I'm reminded through this music that these ancient trees and the places they inhabit are still an enigma to us- something humans can revere but never fully comprehend.” - Geetha Balakrishnan

“Very easy to think of having your feet standing in mangroves or when ears are just at the water level. The sloshing about of a mangrove swamp causing my ears to dip above and below the water, alternating between hearing the world clearly and as a sequence of blubs and gurgles.” - Matthew Lee

“It was bubbly and textured, I felt those mangrove suckers alive and playing in the tide.” - Oonagh Sherrard

“I got some associations to both Bulgarian choir, arabic vibes and even a bit of Morricone.” - Adam McKenzie

“I feel like I can visualise the mangrove germinating and fighting all manmade nonsense.” - Aurelia Flores
